The Milky Way

The eighth silver coin from the Milky Way collector's series is dedicated to the black hole.

When a massive star reaches the final stage of its life, it runs out of thermonuclear fuel andbecomes smaller. Its density increases until it collapses. That's when a black hole is formed - an incredibly massive object whose gravitational field is so strong that nothing escapes. No matter, no information, not even light. Although black holes are invisible, we can observe them thanks to the accretion disk - a vortex of surrounding matter that they voraciously devour. But we don't know the answer to what's going on inside…

The reverse side of the coin has been dedicated by medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., to a dynamic depiction of a black hole - more precisely, its accretion disk - in vivid colours, achieved by means of colouring technology. No photographs or computer graphics were used as a template - the artist created an original watercolour painting of the coin. Stylized space objects - planets and stars - can be seen in the embossed relief, and the composition is closed with the English inscription BLACK HOLE. The obverse side of the coin humorously presents crop circles and a flying saucer illuminating the national emblem of Niue island. This, together with the year of issue 2023 and the nminal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), is a necessary attribute of the foreign issuer of the coin - a Pacific island that provides the Czech Mint with a licence to mint its own commemorative coins.

The coin dedicated to the black hole can be stored in a collector's album full of interesting facts about our home galaxy and the conquerors of the cosmos.
