On Wheels

The fifteenth silver coin from the Czech Mint's On Wheels series pays tribute to the JAWA 50/550 Pioneer motorcycle, which has become an icon and won the hearts of generations of motorcyclists.

At the end of the 1930s, the domestic motorcycle market was completely dominated by
JAWA. It had only the youth left to attract loyal customers. According to the Czechoslovak law of the time, persons over the age of 14 without a driving licence could drive single-track motor vehicles equipped with pedals to drive the rear wheel, the engine capacity of which was no more than 100 cc. In accordance with this definition, the popular JAWA 100 Robot motorcycle was created, which was popular not only with young motorists, but also with those who did not dare to have a larger and more powerful machine. JAWA's efforts to produce a simple means of transport that would be accessible to a wide range of customers continued into the 1950s, but the fledgling moped was eventually redesigned into a small motorcycle with the usual foot-start lever. The laws were changed, motorcycles were now judged by power and top speed, and pedals therefore became irrelevant. Production of the small, uncatalogued JAWA 50/550 Pioneer lightweight motorcycle began in July 1955. The concept and design of this machine was far ahead of the competition in its category. With a weight of 54 kg, it reached a top speed of 45 km/h. The shape of the single seat was so prominent that the Pioneer quickly earned the apt nickname Stump. By the time production ended in the summer of 1958, a total of 106,111 Stumps had been built and were succeeded by the JAWA 50/555, which featured a more powerful engine. At first glance, the new Pioneer was distinguished by its elongated rear wheel fairing, which formed a luggage carrier behind the seat, completely changing the characteristic silhouette of the motorcycle. The production of Pioneers continued, but only one Stump remained...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker
MgA. Martin Dašek, is dominated by a depiction of a JAWA 50/550 motorcycle. The additional motif of the relief is a rosette with a chain that drives the rear wheel. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2022. Following the title of the collector's cycle, the perimeter of the obverse side is formed by sections of the wheels of various means of transport.

The coin comes with a
spectacular packaging in the form of a cardboard book that includes accompanying text and period photographs.
