The seventh episode of Star Wars, subtitled The Force Awakens, kicked off a new chapter in the adored film saga. Its characters, including the droid BB-8, appear on special coins in the form of notes made of silver.

Droid BB-8 is a tiny but fearless astromech who fights against the ruthless First Order in the service of the New Republic and the Resistance. His orange and white spherical body, on which balances an arched head, houses a number of useful tools. These allow the droid to repair spacecraft in flight, perform complex hyperspace jump calculations, and engage in rear-guard action against the enemy. They also help him get his master and friend, fighter pilot Poe Dameron, out of trouble.

On the reverse side of the "note", which was created by the New Zealand Mint, BB-8 is depicted twice - the first portrait (with a detail of the body) is coloured and the second (in the company of Rey) is in the form of an engraving. The insignia of the Resistance of the New Republic also appears in relief. The obverse side then bears the necessary attributes of the issuer, which is the island of Niue - i.e. the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of ONE DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2019.
