Nikola Tesla

The last silver coin in the four-part miniseries dedicated to the brilliant inventor Nikola Tesla commemorates the taming of Niagara Falls.

In the “War of the Currents“ that would decide what would power the world, scientific ideals, the future of humanity and a lot of money were at stake. Both Thomas Edison, who promoted direct current, and Nikola Tesla, who came up with alternating current, needed to win over politicians and the general public to their technologies. The Chicago World's Fair gave them the opportunity to shine. The event, held to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, was intended to be a showcase of American exceptionalism, so the organisers put out a tender for the supply of spectacular public lighting. In the end, Tesla's technology, offered to Chicago by industrialist George Westinghouse, proved more efficient and cheaper. Tens of thousands of bulbs illuminated the city, leaving millions of visitors speechless. Thanks to Tesla, people were able to watch, for example, the first night football game in history. The World's Fair surpassed all expectations, and alternating current won many fans. One of them was the hitherto sceptic Lord Kelvin, who decided who would get the opportunity to harness the unbridled and unlimited energy of Niagara Falls. Tesla, who had been fascinated by the power of water since childhood, immediately jumped at the chance. He again beat Edison in the competition and, in partnership with Westinghouse, built the world's first hydroelectric power station. It took five difficult years, but the first electricity arrived in Buffalo in 1896. The hunger for power grew and soon electricity was flowing into New York City, powering the subways and lighting up Broadway. The Niagara Power Plant expanded and more were built across the United States, providing a quarter of all electricity by 1920. All thanks to Tesla, who had tamed the power of nature...
Medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., dedicated the reverse of the coin to a portrait of Nikola Tesla looking down on the Niagara Power Plant. The composition is supplemented with electric discharges and the English inscription THE POWER OF NIAGARA FALLS. The lightning bolts can also be found on the obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire miniseries. As the licence to issue the commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.

Do not forget that you can store the four coins dedicated to the life and work of Nikola Tesla in a special collector's box which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
