Journey Around the World

The Czech Mint's series of silver coins entitled Journey Around the World is a guide to the most famous cities on the planet. With the sixth issue, you will visit New York.

The first inhabitants of the Hudson River estuary were the Lenape Indians, but they lost their home when European colonists arrived. In 1614, the Dutch founded a settlement here, which they named New Amsterdam, and began trading in furs. However, the area consisting of mainland and adjacent islands separated by narrow straits also appealed to the English, who conquered it in 1664 and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York. That was when the history of the most famous city in the modern world began. For several years in the 18th century, New York was the capital of the United States and soon became its largest city. The population continued to grow in the 19th century, when the metropolis attracted crowds of immigrants, welcomed by the Statue of Liberty, and in the first half of the 20th century, New York became the most populous city on the planet. It lost its primacy in the second half of the 20th century, but its population is still staggering. Today, nearly 9 million people live here, and if the individual boroughs became separate cities, four of them would be among the ten most populous cities in the US. Over 800 different languages are spoken here, and over 40 million visitors come here every year. New York pulsates with life 24 hours a day, which is why it is called "the city that never sleeps." Thanks to Wall Street, it is a global center of finance, and thanks to the United Nations headquarters, it is the focus of international relations. It is also the heart of commerce, media, politics, education, entertainment, art, music, and advertising, the most important transportation hub on the American continent, and the fashion capital. It is home to over 5,000 skyscrapers and the largest concentration of billionaires of any world metropolis. However, social differences between residents are significant, and there are over 150,000 homeless people living here. It is said that you will either love New York or hate it...

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medallist Jiří Hanuš, DiS., is dominated by the Statue of Liberty. In the background behind it stand the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and Brooklyn Bridge skyscrapers. The obverse side, designed by Asamat Baltaev, DiS., which is common to the entire series of travel coins, features flags and landmarks of world capitals such as Prague, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, and New York. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued under the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue, 2026, on the obverse.

The coins in the Around the World series weigh three troy ounces – a first in the history of the Czech Mint. The package includes an illustrated brochure.
