Journey Around the World

The series of silver coins of the Czech Mint called Around the World is a guide to the most visited capitals of the planet. The second issue takes you to the United Kingdom, whose capital is London.

The advantageous location of the flat landscape near the mouth of the River Thames was already realised by the ancient Celts, but it was the Roman conquerors who founded a settlement here in 43 AD. London experienced repeated ups and downs in the following centuries, but despite all the invasions, epidemics, wars and fires, it managed to thrive. It was the seat of powerful kings and queens, the home of William Shakespeare, witnessed the Industrial Revolution, and eventually became the greatest city in the world - the heart of the British Empire over which the sun never set. A lot of time has passed since then, but the plethora of influences that mingled here are still evident today. This diverse and multicultural metropolis is a paradise for anyone interested in history, art, fashion, gastronomy or nightlife. Every businessman knows that London is the financial centre of the planet. Tens of millions of people visit every year to shop, study, work and, of course, admire the iconic landmarks...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., is dominated by the coloured flag of Great Britain, which permeates a collage of London landmarks. It features the Palace of Westminster, the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the Big Ben bell, the London Eye observation wheel, Tower Bridge and the Gherkin skyscraper. The obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle of travel coins, then presents the flags and landmarks of world capitals such as Prague, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and New York. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024 on the obverse side.

The weight of the coins from the Journey Around the World series is three troy ounces for the first time in the history of the Czech Mint. The package includes a picture booklet.
