Product description

The hundred-towers mother of cities attracts millions of tourists every year and it is the fifth most visited metropolis in Europe. At first glance, Prague is a unit, and visitors do not even know that it consists of four medieval towns which were joined together in 1784. The Czech Mint dedicated the first silver coin from the four-part miniseries to the Old Town of Prague.

When the Old Town is said, most of us think of the Old Town Square, dominated by the Old Town Hall. Its history dates back to 1338, when King John of Luxembourg granted the Prague citizens the privilege to create their own administrative center. A patrician house became the foundation of the town hall, a huge tower was built in 1364, the gothic chapel of Petr Parler in 1381, and astronomical clock without which we can not imagine Prague today was built in 1410. The medieval building gradually expanded to other rooms and houses. However, the Old Town Hall is not just an architectural gem. There are a number of significant events from the Czech past, such as the election of Hussite King George of Poděbrady, the execution of 27 Czech protestant leaders after the Battle of White Mountain, or the Prague Uprising during the Second World War.

Academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů dedicated the reverse side of the coin to the Old Town Hall with an astronomical clock. The composition was supplemented by the Latin inscription  ANTIQUA CIVITAS PRAGENSIS (Old Town of Prague) together with the historical emblem of the city. The coat of arms is made up of towers and a gate with the arm holding the sword. The scene refers to the courage of the Pragues who defended the town in the Thirty Years' War. The obverse side is common to the entire miniseries and presents the Prague silhouette (enclosed by Prague Castle and Charles Bridge), accompanied by the inscription PRAGA CAPUT REGNI (Prague Head of Kingdom). The obverse side of the coin bears the portrait and the name of Emperor Elizabeth II, the issue of the coin 2019 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), which are the attributes of the Pacific island of Niue that provides the Czech Mint with a license to coin its own commemorative coins.

Other coins represent an added value to a numismatic collection or an attractive monument for a visit of the capital and they will be dedicated to the New Town of Prague, Malá Strana and Hradčany.
