Product description
The stories of the inventive and fearless Ferdinand the Ant have amused us for 85 years. The cartoon character of the writer Ondřej Sekora appears on the first silver coin from the five-part collector´s miniseries of the Czech Mint on this occasion.
Various adventures in the books and comics as well as in films and serials are waiting for ant with a spotted scarf who manages all sorts of work. He loves a beautiful but arrogant Miss Ladybird. He is captured by evil red ants and forced to serve a bumblebee, a grand beetle, a diving beetle and an antlion. He takes care of larvae of caddisflies and ants, teaches a grumpy snail, tames wild aphids or organizes an insect olympics. These stories reflect the society at the time of their creation although all take place in a fairytale microcosm. Ferdinand was full of enthusiasm in the postwar years of the 1950s when was preparing for war in the atmosphere of the Munich crisis in the late 1930s.
The reverse side of the commemorative mintage presents a graphic representation of a characteristic two-dimensional character. It is the work of the medal maker Irena Hradecká, DiS., who has rich experience with fairytale coins. The obverse side bears the name and the portrait of Emperor Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2018, and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), which are the attributes of the island of Niue that provides the Czech Mint with a license to coin its own commemorative coins.
Each coin is set in a special collector's album with illustrations by Ondřej Sekora where you can store four more coins with Ferdinand, Beetle Sack, Ladybird and snail.
