Ferdy the Ant
The Czech Mint issues the third silver coin from miniseries on the occasion of the 85th birthday of Ferdy the Ant and introduces the birthday creature together with the Ladybird.
Ondřej Sekora's books are popular, among other things, because children are entertainingly discovering the natural insect relations. However, in many cases, they mirror the writer´s imagination. An example would be the favour of Ferdy the Ant with Miss Ladybird. Such a relationship would not stand in fact. Ants and ladybirds are predators. Their interests are different and they could be likened to drovers and thieves of cattle. Ants are renowned for keeping aphids - protecting them from danger and getting sweet honey for them. For ladybirds, however, the aphids are the delicacy - one beetle larvae consumes six hundred of them during its development ... Ondřej Sekora also altered Ferdy's identity. An ant community is like a bee one. It consists of a mother-queen and her daughter-workers. Males hatch only once a year, they do not stay in the anthill, however, they leave to mate and later die. Every common non-winged ant in the nest – which means Ferdy - is a female.
The reverse side depicts Ferdy and Ladybird as they dance together in the grass. The two-dimensional figures have been transformed into a plastic form by the expert medal maker Irena Hradecká DiS. The obverse side bears the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to coin its own commemorative coins. The attributes are the name and the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD).
Remember that you can store a coin with Ferdy and Ladybird in a collector´s album that was a part of the first Ferdy´s coin.
