Czech and Czechoslovak Hockey Legends

The Czech Mint dedicated the penultimate silver coin from the cycle Legends of Czechoslovak Hockey to Jiří Holeček.

"As a little boy, I knew that our national team won the last gold medal in 1949. And as I grew up, I thought that it would be beautiful if I could play for that national team and if our generation won the gold medal. Well, it happened in the end,"
Jiří Holeček says. We did not win the title of world champion once, but three times, and the goalkeeper known as "Fakír" contributed greatly to this. "My nickname originated in Jihlava, when choosing to go to military service. I was the thinnest of them all, I weighed sixty kilos. Teammates said that I twisted like a snake and that I only miss the fakir's whistle. They started calling me "fakir, go to the goal " the goalkeeper says with a smile. He flustered his opponents not only with a lightning observation and incredible relaxation in his knuckles, but also with biting remarks: "Wait what they will tell you at home in Moscow when you lose again…"

The medal maker
Mgr. Petr Horák became the author of the coin. On the reverse side of the coin, there is the portrait of the goalkeeper, supplemented with his name, national team jersey number and greatest achievements: JIŘÍ HOLEČEK - 2 - INNSBRUCK 1976 (silver medal from the Winter Olympics) - WORLD CHAMPION 1972 1976 1977 - MEMBER OF THE HALL OF FAME IIHF AND CZECHOSLOVAK HOCKEY. The composition of the reverse is supplemented with the characteristic laminate mask of the goalkeeper. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign license of the State of Samoa, their obverse sides bear the necessary attributes of this issuer – the state coat of arms, the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2020 and the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (WST).

Do not miss the stylish
collector's case in the form of a puck that can hold a whole series of fourteen hockey coins.
