Tokyo Olympics

The Czech team won a total of eight medals - two gold, three silver and three bronze at the Paralympics in Tokyo. The silver coin of the Czech Mint pays tribute to the golden Paralympian Adam Peška.

Adam Peška
was born as a perfectly healthy boy, but after he started having problems with movement, doctors diagnosed him with the incurable disease called muscular dystrophy. Although he was confined to a wheelchair, he longed to play sports. That's when boccia came into his life - a Paralympic sport similar to pétanque that is suitable for athletes with the most severe disabilities. He started to devote all his free time to training, in which his mother Ivana was a great support. "Each player has six leather balls. One is red and the other is blue. The aim of the game is to place as many balls of their colour as possible to the target white ball. In my category, I need an inclined ramp and a sports assistant to play - my mum who sets up the ramp according to my instructions, puts the balls on it and I launch them using the antenna on my helmet," explains the fighter, for whom taking part in the Paralympics in Tokyo was a lifelong dream. In the end, he not only participated, but won. He went through the entire competition undefeated and showed he had strong nerves, beating his more experienced Greek rival in a dramatic final to win gold.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker
Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., presents the bocci player with a triumphant smile on his face and a gold medal around his neck. The inscription states ADAM PEŠKA – TOKIO 2020 – ZLATÁ MEDAILE – BOCCIA. The Czech Mint's sports coins are issued abroad with license from the State of Samoa, and their obverse side therefore bears the necessary attributes of this issuer - the national emblem, the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2021 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (WST).

Do not miss the commemoration of a unique triumph of Czech sport!
