The zebra is an unmistakable creature thanks to its stripes. You won't find two specimens in the world with the same pattern. But what is the purpose of its black and white colouring? After all, it would be much better to blend in a savannah full of dangerous predators. There are several hypotheses. Firstly, zebra stripes blend together in a running herd, making it difficult for attacking animals to distinguish and catch them. Secondly, the contrasting stripes confuse and disorientate difficult stinging insects, which therefore prefer to avoid zebras. Thirdly - there is a change in air temperature between the stripes, which cools zebras in hot climates... Another question is whether a zebra is black with white stripes or white with black stripes. Science has an answer to that, too. During embryonic development, zebra skin is black before the pigment cells are deactivated, so zebras are naturally black with white stripes…

The reverse side of the commemorative coin is striped in black and white, with the symmetrical pattern cut by a running zebra. The optical illusion makes the coin appear coloured, even though it is not actually coloured. The obverse side is then filled with abstract shapes that gradually transition into animal camouflage. The attributes of the issuer of the coin - the national emblem of the Republic of Palau and the nominal value of $20 (USD) - are also incorporated in the centre of the obverse side. All this is processed in deep relief.
