Product description
The Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik left an indelible mark not only in his native Ljubljana, but also in Prague, where he provided the Prague Castle with its current appearance at the request of T. G. Masaryk. A silver coin with a nominal value of 200 CZK issued in top quality proof by the Czech National Bank pays tribute to him on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Both adored and reviled, contemporary yet timeless, regional yet universally global - this is the architecture that Jože Plečnik gave to Europe. The Slovenian architect and urban planner sought to create a timeless concept that would link all historical phases. His studies in Vienna steered him towards an Art Nouveau expression. Influenced by his stay in Italy and France, he used elements of antiquity and the early Renaissance for a change. Some blamed him for his departure from traditional architecture, others for not embracing strict functionalism. Some saw in his work a kind of decorativism, others a progressive modernism. When people looked at his buildings, they often could not grasp them or place them in time. They could have stood for several centuries and could just as easily have been built a year ago. For example, Plečnik's Vinohrady Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord.
In the art competition of the Czech National Bank, the design by medal maker Vojtěch Dostál, DiS. The expert committee was impressed by the perfect portrait of Jože Plečnik in combination with fragments of his buildings. The coin features the facade of the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square in Prague and the finial of the column on the Moravian Bastion in the Na Valech Garden of Prague Castle.
