Product description

The silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, which boasts top-quality proof, is issued on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Bedřich Smetana.

Although Bedřich Smetana was idealized into the image of a martyr tested by fate during his lifetime, he is rightly considered the founder of modern Czech national music. His work, which was in the spirit of neo-Romanticism and late national revival, sought to create a distinctive Czech musical style. The focus of his work became his operas to represent the newly forming Czech culture. Each of the eight operas he composed on themes from national history, mythology and contemporary life was distinctive - comic, tragic, celebratory and romantic. Among Smetana's other works, the emotional cycle of symphonic poems My Fatherland stood out, full of triumph but also melancholy. It is incredible that this masterpiece was written when its author was completely deaf…

The design by the medal maker Jiří Hanuš, DiS. won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee appreciated the imaginative incorporation of the text MÁ VLAST into the panorama of Hradčany on the obverse side and the portrait of Bedřich Smetana on the reverse side of the coin.

The exclusive producer of Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation coins - is the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
