Product description

The Czech National Bank commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Max Švabinský by issuance of the silver coin of a top-quality proof with a nominal value of 200 CZK.

When Max Švabinský was ten, he sold his first works, which he displayed in the window of the Kromeříž pharmacy. He was called the “prodigy“ and grew up to be one of the most important Czech artists of all time. He was extraordinarily talented and hardworking. His artistic expression, which was based on the tradition of national realist art, was both emotionally and technically perfect. His work exuded warmth and delicacy as well as depth and monumentality. He achieved virtuosity in all artistic disciplines - he mastered oil painting and pen drawing, lithography, woodcut and stained glass. A keen admirer of all the beauties of the world became famous for his paintings of landscapes and nature, portraits of great personalities, erotic motifs and banknotes. His work laid the foundations of 20th century modern Czech art and acquired national significance.

The design by the medal maker MgA. Josef Oplištil won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The reverse side belongs to a faithful portrait of Max Švabinský. The obverse side presents a perfect relief reconstruction of Švabinský' most famous painting entitled Chudý kraj (The Poor Country).

The exclusive producer of Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation coins - is the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
