Product description

In the year when we commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karel Havlíček Borovský, a silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK has been issued in quality proof.

A journalist and poet
with a sharp pen, a politician and critic with a keen mind, an uncompromising and courageous patriot - such was Karel Havlíček Borovský. The author of more than two thousand literary works became famous as the founder of Czech political journalism. He successively ran the Prague Newspaper, the National Newspaper and Slovan, through which he published his timeless democratic ideas. His expression skills allowed him to argue with bravado, but also to touch a nerve. He rarely missed biting satire and was twice put on trial for his offensive articles. Although he was acquitted, as an incorrigible rebel he was sent into exile in the Tyrolean town of Brixen. His struggle against Austrian absolutism remains to this day a symbol of the desire for freedom and the fight against oppression.

The design by the
academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee particularly appreciated Havlíček's excellent portrait on the reverse side and the imaginative collage of his works on the obverse side, which features the National Newspaper and Slovan, as well as the poem King Lavra.
