Product description
This sensational silver coin from a series that nostalgically recalls technological milestones is shaped like a Walkman.
At the end of the 1970s, anyone who wanted to listen to their favorite music comfortably and privately had to sit at home with a record player or tape recorder. At that time, car radios represented the pinnacle of mobility. But in 1979, the Japanese company Sony came up with a revolutionary device that changed everything. The Walkman – a small portable cassette player equipped with lightweight headphones – allowed people to take their music with them wherever they went. Suddenly, it was possible to listen to albums on a long train ride to school or while jogging in the park. The Walkman quickly became a symbol of freedom, individuality, and the modern lifestyle of the 1980s and 1990s. Music on cassettes had its limitations—the magnetic tapes had to be rewound, they could get tangled, and the sound quality deteriorated over time. Nevertheless, it was a small technical revolution. Although Walkmans eventually gave way to Discman players, MP3 players, and finally smartphones, they remain an icon and a reminder of an era when life got its own soundtrack...
To resemble a real historical artifact, the Walkman coin is colored. On the reverse side, the inscription COYN stands out above the slightly open door – that is, a coin with a hard Y. This is not a mistake, but a reference to Sony. The obverse side shows the back of the famous device with an open space for batteries and a tangled tape. Because the coin from Power Coin is issued under the license of a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, it also bears the necessary attributes – the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2025.
The coin is set in an attractive frame that will delight any lover of retro music.
