Product description
This silver coin, featuring the legendary Scottish hero William Wallace, is both a unique work of art and a collector’s rarity.
At the end of the 13th century, the Scots were a sovereign nation with their own territory and their own monarch. However, this did not sit well with the English ruler Edward I, whose thirst for power knew no bounds. First, he conquered Wales and then invaded Scotland, where he deposed King John I. The proud Scottish patriots, of course, would not stand for this, and so they rose up against the oppressor. One of them was William Wallace—a country nobleman who was meant to be a priest, but fate decreed that he would become a warrior. He began as a lone outlaw who killed two English soldiers, and soon gathered around him an army of men who yearned for freedom. He led them to their most famous victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, where he masterfully used the terrain to defeat a much stronger opponent. However, he was not merely a warrior with a sword in his hand. He understood politics and was able to inspire the fragmented Scottish clans toward a common goal. He was therefore rightly knighted and proclaimed the Protector of Scotland. In the Battle of Falkirk, however, fortune turned against him and his army was routed. At that point, resistance against the English began to crumble. Wallace tried to reunite the divided Scots; he even went to France for help, but was betrayed and captured. In London, he was charged with treason and executed in the most brutal manner. His fate was meant to deter the Scots from any further thoughts of rebellion, but it had the exact opposite effect. Edward I was forced to march north again and died during this campaign. Shortly thereafter, Scotland was liberated. Although Robert Bruce ultimately emerged victorious over the English, the name William Wallace will forever be synonymous with freedom…
The reverse side of the coin depicts William Wallace with a sword in his fist. The hero is surrounded by comrades in the fight for freedom, with the beautiful landscape of the Scottish Highlands behind him. The obverse side is dedicated to a vast array of weapons, revealing that the coin is part of a series dedicated to legendary warriors. Since the coin is issued with license by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes - the national coat of arms, the nominal value of FIVE DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026. All of this stands out in high relief, enhanced by patina and gold plating.
The mintage of this coin by T&S Coin is limited to just 500 pieces.
