Through its silver coins, the Mint XXI commemorates the most famous works of art in the world. Naturally, Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night is among them.

In 1889, Vincent van Gogh created a remarkable work titled Starry Night, which presents a view of a night landscape. However, this is by no means a mere depiction of reality. The sky swirls in dramatic spirals, the stars pulsate with a golden glow, and the moon shines with almost supernatural power. Beneath it all lies a sleepy little town… The oil painting was created during van Gogh’s stay at a sanatorium in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where the Dutch painter went after a nervous breakdown, and represents his definitive turn toward imaginative liberation. The technique of short, dynamic brushstrokes lends the painting movement and restlessness. The composition is bold and emotional, but what continues to fascinate viewers most is the artist’s profound inner experience—his effort to capture not only what he sees, but above all what he feels. What makes the night scene so captivating? Perhaps the contrast between the calm of the earth and the turbulence of the sky, between order and chaos, between silence and the restlessness of the human soul…

The reverse side of the rectangular coin is entirely filled with a reproduction of van Gogh’s work. Thanks to colorization technology, Starry Night stands out in vivid colors. The obverse side, filled with decorative curves, bears the issuer’s attributes. Since the coin is issued under license by the state of Cameroon, it bears its name and the nominal value of 1,000 CFA FRANCS (XAF).
