Product description
The majestic silver coins of the Czech Mint, weighing one kilogram, gradually commemorate the great men of Czech history. They are dedicated to Master Jan Hus and the Bethlehem Chapel in 2022.
The Bethlehem Chapel was founded in 1391 to hold sermons exclusively in the Czech language. Although it was not a parish church, it was very large. It accommodated three thousand believers who came here to hear learned ideas that until then had been heard only at the University of Prague. The number of visitors from all strata of medieval society increased even more in 1402, when a new administrator and preacher, Master Jan Hus, began to maintain the chapel. This priest and rector of Charles University became famous as one of the fathers of the Christian Reformation. In his passionate sermons and learned writings, he criticised secular greed and the moral decadence of the Catholic Church - for example, the despicable practice of buying indulgences. He went so far in pointing out the hypocritical practices of the powerful that he was branded a heretic. In spite of threats and curses, however, he continued to defy the unlimited and corrupting influence of the ruling estates of the medieval world in the name of justice. When he refused to renounce his truths, he was condemned to be burned at the Council of Constance in 1415. He did not back down, even at the stake, and became a martyr for his followers among the common and noble people. His faith, his steadfastness, and above all his devotion to the truth cost him his life, but lit a flame of defiance that gave the people hope for change...
The author of the coin is academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová. The collage on the reverse side consists of a portrait of Jan Hus, the southern facade of the Bethlehem Chapel and a comprehensive text JAN HUS - 14.3.1402 JE JMENOVÁN SPRÁVCEM A KAZATELEM V NEDÁVNO VYBUDOVANÉ BETLÉMSKÉ KAPLI V PRAZE (translated as JAN HUS - 14.3.1402 IS APPOINTED ADMINISTRATOR AND PREACHER AT THE RECENTLY BUILT BETHLEHEM CHAPEL IN PRAGUE). The obverse side then presents another view of the Bethlehem Chapel, a decorative floral motif and the seal of Jan Hus with Catherine, patroness of the liberal arts. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued WITH the license of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 80 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2022.
The coin is stored in a luxurious wooden case and supplemented with a special numbered certificate of authenticity.
