Product description
St. Vitus Cathedral is a spiritual symbol that is dear to the whole nation regardless of religion. It was built by Charles IV in 1344. Therefore, the Czech Mint issued a set of four gold coins to the occasion of the 675th anniversary of that event.
The tabernacle, which is an unmatched height of Gothic architecture, is located behind the walls of Prague Castle. Therefore it had been settled by Czech rulers for thousand years and played an important role in Czech history. The first coin commemorates the foundation stone-laying of the temple attended by the Father of the Homeland, John of Bohemia and Arnošt of Pardubice. Arnošt became the first Czech archbishop, therefore, the second coin was dedicated to him. While the third coin commemorates the cathedral where the coronation events of Czech rulers and their wives took place, the fourth coin represents it as their burial ground.
All four mintages were made by an expert medal maker and teacher MgA. Josef Oplištil. The reverse side of the first coin bears a parchment next to the symbolic foundation stone with the date of November 21, 1344 from which the future cathedral protrudes in all its glory. You can also find the silhouette of the cathedral on the reverse side of the second coin, but it is dominated by the bust of Arnošt of Pardubice. The reverse side of the third mintage was dedicated to the scene from the royal coronation - a kneeling ruler, whom the cleric puts a crown - complemented by the illuminated interior of the cathedral and lilies of the Saint Wenceslas Crown. The reverse side of the fourth coin bears a depiction of the underground tomb of the Czech kings that is accompanied by a decorated cross. Since the coins are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, their common obverse side bears the necessary attributes of this foreign issuer, which means the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS and the year of the issue 2019 - incorporated into the main nave of the cathedral, throught whose windows the light passes through.
The set of coins was placed in a luxurious wooden etui with a lid decorated with an engraving of a rosette - the circular window of the cathedral.
