Product description

The Czech Mint's free series dedicated to famous cathedrals has so far featured St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The fourth set of four silver coins pays tribute to London's Westminster Abbey.

Standing on the banks of the River
Thames, Westminster Abbey is a silent witness to a glorious British history spanning one thousand years. From the era of William the Conqueror in 1066 to Elizabeth II in 1953, British monarchs have walked to their coronation or wedding here, and some have found their eternal resting place. The remains of three thousand great personalities - knights, church dignitaries, scientists and artists - are also interred here. The monument, which rightly ranks among the most beautiful and important buildings in London, has features characteristic of several different architectural styles. St Peter's Basilica, built in the 11th century at the request of Edward III, was rebuilt in the 13th century under Henry III into a majestic cathedral in the Gothic style. The sinuous arches pointing high into the sky, the rosette windows, the stained glass windows and the elegant buttressed arches, which were extremely fashionable at the time, still have medieval atmosphere. In the 18th century, two more massive towers were built on the west side of the cathedral in the early neo-Gothic style.

The reverse sides of the four commemorative coins, which are the work of the medal maker
MgA. Tereza Eisner, commemorate different aspects of Westminster Abbey. The first coinage presents the coronation chair of King Edward, which bears the name of the founder of the Abbey. The second mintage, depicting the north front of the cathedral, celebrates the Gothic appearance of the abbey. The third mintage belongs to world-famous writers whose remains rest in the so-called Poets' Corner - alongside the statue of William Shakespeare are the names of Lord Byron, Rudyard Kipling, Lewis Carroll, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and William Blake. The fourth mintage commemorates our footprint in UK history - inspired by the memorial to Czechoslovak airmen who fought in the service of the island kingdom during the Second World War. The obverse side, which is common to the four coins, is dedicated to the west front of the cathedral. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, the obverse side still bears its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2022.

The set of four coins is stored in an elegant case.
