Sets of circulation coins

The series, prepared by the Czech Mint in cooperation with the Czech National Bank, presents protected natural areas of the Czech Republic. The second set of circulation coins is dedicated to the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

The territory of Bohemian Switzerland boasts a unique geomorphology that is unparalleled in the whole of Europe. The typical landscape on the border of the Czech Republic and Germany, which has been only sparsely settled by humans, is made up of a combination of cubic sandstone and rounded shapes of volcanic rocks. The local rock formations take many forms - breathtaking walls, towers, cities, mazes and deeply incised river canyons. Forests cover 97% of the area. The influx of settlers to the Šluknov region during German colonisation in the 13th and 14th centuries created a demand for agricultural land, which was obtained by burning forest stands. Due to the poor accessibility of the terrain and the lack of suitable land, this transformation did not affect Bohemian Switzerland much, but the local forests served as a source of wood. The first attempts to protect the area date back to the 18th century, when Count Thun-Hohenstein restricted cattle grazing and logging on the Děčín estate. The romantic name of Bohemian Switzerland also dates from this time, thanks to Swiss painters, for whom the landscape along the Elbe River reminded them of their homeland. In the 19th century the area became very popular. It attracted climbers and cruise liners. The Kinský and Clary-Aldringen families contributed to this by making places of tourist interest, such as the Pravčická Gate, accessible. With the influx of visitors, the need for managed protection of the area grew. A number of reserves were established in the 20th century, but the area needed to be protected as a whole, and therefore the Czech Switzerland National Park was declared in 2000.

The commemorative token from the workshop of medal maker Jaromíra Hřibová, which is an integral part of the set, reminds us of the beauty of the Pravčická Gate. "I do not focus on its overall shape, but only on the cut-out, on the specific pieces of sandstone that make it up - every stone and crevice, their lights, shadows and textures," explains the author. "Yet something of the iconic shape of the gate remains, even in the detailed depiction. We can see it when we put the two sides of the token side by side. The obverse and reverse are linked to each other," adds the young artist, who created the token as part of her coursework at the higher vocational school in Jablonec nad Nisou... The set of circulating coins naturally includes currency - namely six metal coins with nominal values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 CZK. The individual coins bear the year 2024 and have never been in circulation.

All of this is set in a thematic packaging in the form of a booklet that presents the character of the national park in words and pictures.
