The replica of Karl von Liechtenstein thaler of 1616 from the Opava Mint is based on the original coin’s design and struck from a troy ounce of pure silver. It represents Late-Renaissance thaler coin of a prince minted primarily for representation purposes. Karl von Liechtenstein gained the coinage right authorizing him to mint these coins at the end of 1613 together with the Duchy of Troppau (or Opava) which was given to him as a hereditary feud by Matthias II of Habsburg, the King of Bohemia. The Liechtenstein coins were however minted in Opava for a brief period of time, the mintage was terminated already in 1629.
The composition of the mint field copies official mintage of dynasties. On the obverse side it is dominated by the breast of the issuer with a wide “Spanish” collar on the left; the reverse side of the coin features heraldic symbols. A simple family coat-of-arms of the House of Liechtenstein with horizontally halved white-red escutcheon is placed on the more honourable right side (when viewed on the left); on the left side there is the coat-of-arms of Troppau in the form of a red-silver vertically divided escutcheon based on the family coat-of-arms of the Přemyslids of Troppau. Both heraldic symbols side by side are hidden under one crest with covers and with a princely crown above. The sign of the mint master of Troppau Burkhart Hasse in the form of interlocked letters “B“ and “H“ is placed at the lower rim of the coin between the coats-of-arms.
The text in circumscription in Latin contains the issuer’s name and titles (partially abbreviated). It begins at the upper edge of the obverse side and continues to the reverse side – therefore it has to be read as a whole: CAROLVS . D[EI] . G[RATIA] . DVX . OPPAVIA . PRINCEPS . ET . GVBER[NATOR] . D[OMVS] . DE . LICHTENSTEIN . 1616. The text can be freely translated into English as follows: Charles, by the Grace of God the Duke of Troppau, Prince and Governor of the House of Liechtenstein, 1616.
