The legendary Queen is the first band to appear on the commemorative coins from the Royal Mint's new series. It will be 50 years since the band was formed in 2020.

Queen's name was suggested by Freddie Mercury. Why Queen? "It's just a name, but it's royal and it sounds beautiful. It's a powerful word, totally universal and immediate," the phenomenal frontman said. As all British metallic currency bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II, guitarist Brian May joked that their coin is probably the first to feature the Queen embossed on both sides.

The reverse side of the coin, the design of which was created by Chris Facey, presents the band's logo surrounded by musical instruments - Brian May's Red Special guitar, Roger Taylor's Ludwig drums, John Deacon's Fender Precision bass guitar and Freddie Mercury's Bechstein piano, along with a microphone on a stick. It is not without interest that the three pressed keys on the keyboard correspond to the opening notes of Bohemian Rhapsody. The obverse side of the coin is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the nominal value of 5 POUNDS (GBP), the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the text "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D" (Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith).
