Cubism in czech architecture

The first platinum coin of the Czech Mint from the four-part series entitled Cubism in czech architecture commemorates the House of the Black Madonna.

The House of the Black Madonna,
built in 1911 and 1912 accoreding to the design of architect Josef Gočár, represents the first monumental realisation of Cubist architecture in Prague. The entrance portal, dormer windows, wrought-iron grilles and staircase railings speak the characteristic language of Cubism. The reinforced concrete structure with a mansard roof, which was conceived as a multifunctional department store with a café, offices and apartments, was named after a statue from 17th century that was transferred from the original Baroque building and incorporated into the northeast corner of the building.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker
MgA. Josef Oplištil, presents the articulated facade of the Prague house. The building is framed by cubist ornaments incorporating the inscriptions JOSEF GOČÁR – DŮM U ČERNÉ MATKY BOŽÍ (JOSEF GOČÁR - HOUSE OF THE BLACK MADONNA). Cubist elements are also presented on the obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire series. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued WITH the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the nominal value of 50 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue 2021.

Three more Prague cubist landmarks will appear on the Czech Mint's platinum coins -
Ďáblický Cemetery, Kovařovic's Villa and the Cubist Lamp.
