Product description
This commemorative coin from The Royal Mint commemorates one of the greatest personalities of the 20th century - Mahatma Gandhi.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is known around the world as the Mahatma or the Great Spirit. In his native India he is also hailed as the Father of the Nation and no wonder... He came from a wealthy merchant family and studied law in London, but because the western world saw only the colour of his skin, he decided to become a politician to change the situation of the oppressed. His moderate ideas were a success and his non-violent non-cooperation with autocratic power led India on a path of peaceful revolt against British colonialism. He was imprisoned several times for his activities, but his moral superiority was so strong that it eventually led to India's independence. However, Gandhi's compassion for all people, states and faiths eventually proved fatal to him. The man who proved that victory could be won without a gun was shot dead by a Hindu extremist who despised his idea of religious tolerance.
The reverse side of the coin presents the lotus flower, which symbolises gentleness and meekness, but also strength and the ability to grow despite adversity. The artist with Indian roots, Heena Glover, added the Indian national plant named MAHATMA GANDHI and the quote MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE. The obverse side of the coin is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the text ELIZABETH II D G REG F D (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith), the year of issue 2021 and the nominal value of 5 POUNDS (GBP).
The commemorative coin, struck in base metal, is stored in special packaging that tells its story (in English).
