Kroměříž thaler of bishop Liechtenstein replica standard

Kroměříž thaler replica of 1683 designed by the original coin is struck from the troy ounce of fine silver. It represents a typical decorative and visually attractive Baroque prestige coin. The obverse side features bareheaded bust of the issuer in elaborate bishop’s robe. The reverse side of the coin is richly decorated with heraldic signs; the base is formed by a heart-shaped shield divided in four sections where Liechtenstein family coat-of-arms is placed in the centre as a so-called heart card. Symbols of church and secular power of Olomouc bishops are placed above, i.e. the bishop’s mitre and pastoral staff (on the left) and prince’s crown and sword (on the right). Between the mitre and the crown there is the year “1683“, which replaced the original year “1671“. The sign of the Kroměříž mint operated in that period by the bishop’s administration is hidden below the shield which is entwined by an ornamental band with leafwork at the lower rim of the coin: two pikes from the bishop’s sign can be seen in a rectangular cartouche.
The Latin text in circumscription includes the name and numerous abbreviated titles of the issuer. A ligature resembling a small number nine (“9“), rare on coins but quite usual in Latin of the period, was used here to replace the Latin ending “us“ behind the first name. The text in circumscription begins at the upper rim of the obverse side and continues on the reverse side; it should therefore be read as a whole: CAROL[VS] D[EI] . G[RATIA] . EP[ISCOP]VS . OLOMVCENSIS . DVX . S[ACRI] . R[OMANI] . I[MPERII] . PRINCEPS . REG[IA] . CAP[ELLA] . BOHE[MIA] . E[T] . DE . LIECHTENSTAIN . COM[ES] . The text can freely be translated as follows: Charles, by the Grace of God the Bishop of Olomouc, duke, prince of the Holy Roman Empire, count of the Czech Royal Chapel and count of Liechtenstein.
