Product description
In the second issue of the Stories of Our History series, the tenth century merges with the twentieth century. The quarter-ounce gold medal of the Czech Mint is devoted to St. Wenceslas in a unique presentation by J. V. Myslbek.
The story of how Wenceslaus' prince Wenceslas was betrayed and murdered by his brother Boleslav became an integral part of our national identity and had been passed down from generation to generation for over a thousand years. The tragic death gave rise to a series of legends that made Wencleslas one of the most popular saints, the patron saint of the Czech lands and the only Czech saint whose feast is part of a worldwide calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. It is no wonder, therefore, that he had been surrendered by many works of art across the history, despite the fact that his form is shrouded with a veil of mystery. The oldest Wenceslas statue dates from the time of Charles IV, who was his great admirer, and is located in the Cathedral of St. Vitus. The most renowned one is undoubtedly the equestrian monument standing on Wenceslas Square. The work of the founder of modern Czech sculpture Josef Vaclav Myslbek became a dumb witness of the turbulent events of the twentieth century. The republic was declared 100 years ago, the communists seized power here and we regained democracy. Even in today's peaceful times, the statue is the meeting point for manifestations, celebrations, but also private meetings that traditionally take place "under the tail".
Expert medalmaker MgA. Martin Dasek donated an obverse side of the medal to the overall view of the famous monument and the excerpt from the classic statement "SAINT WENCESLAS, LET NOT PERISH US AND THE FUTURE". The reverse side of the medal is a scene from the time when a statue in the life-size had been created. The composition of the reverse is completed by a copy composed of the name of JOSEF VÁCLAV MYSLBEK and the years 1894-1925, when the statue had been reworked.
Each of just 100 pieces of gold quarter-ounce medals includes a special certificate of authenticity.
