Stories of Our History

The history of Masaryk University is a story of the czech desire for education. The entire century, which has passed since its founding, is mirrored in the fourth commemorative medal from the cycle of the Czech Mint "Stories of Our History" embossed from one quarter of an ounce of pure gold.

The University of Brno with four faculties - law, medical, natural sciences and philosophy - was established by the law of 28 January 1919. This glorious moment was preceded by the decades of efforts of Czech patriots headed by T.G. Masaryk, a professor at Charles University, supported by other teachers of Prague universities, students and public. The new university was  named after Masaryk as evidence of gratitude. Karel Englis, professor of economics and one of the most prominent figures in the public life of the First Republic became its first rector. The mission of the institution was defined by a commemorative charter which wished "that the Brno University would live, grow and bloom in a noble racing with the older sister of Prague to become a work of spirits and hearts for all the sons and daughters of our nation desiring true education and to educate workmen with enthusiastic love for the nation, and with the will to serve the country." However, it lost freedom and the lives of students and professors because of persecution of the Nazi and Communist totalitarian regimes. The university could return to original idea only after 1989. It does a credit to its founders even to this day despite the rivalry of Czech and European institutions.

The expert medal maker MgA. Martin Dasek dedicated the obverse side of the medal to T. G. Masaryk and Karel Englis. Their busts are symmetrically separated by the date of foundation of the university. A balanced composition of the reverse side represents the contemporary nine faculties of Masaryk University and is closed by the characteristic silhouette of Brno.

An integral part of each medal is a special certificate of authenticity that tells its story.
