Stories of Our History

The sixth gold medal weighing one quarter of a troy ounce from the Stories of our history series tells the story of the Liberec Zoo and how it did not celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The oldest zoo in the former Czechoslovakia
was preparing for the celebrations of its 100th anniversary in 2019. On that occasion, the researchers' association was to find out more about its beginnings, which had not yet been mapped. However, historians have discovered much older documents, instead of documents from 1919, which show that the zoo should celebrate its 115th birthday! It was discovered that the director of the garden had confused the era and decided to deny its oldest history in 1929. The Liberec Zoo has come a long way since the original exhibition in 1904, in which the Ornithological Association of Liberec presented various birds, deers and small animals. Over the course of 115 years, the garden has left the exhibiton and has become a sought-after educational institution open to the general public, an active participant in international science and conservation projects and a renowned breeding facility focusing on rare animals. Endangered species that thrive in Liberec include the Berber Lion, which was exterminated in the wild, a Somali donkey, which is the most endangered species of the equine family in the world, Bukhara Urial, one of the most endangered large mammals on the planet, or Maneless zebra that is on the brink of extinction.

Medal maker
MgA. Martin Dašek dedicated the commemorative medal to these four rare animals. On the obverse side there is their depiction, on the reverse side there are their names. On the medal you will find the inscription 1904 ZOO LIBEREC, together with a picture of the oldest building of the complex from 1906 - the so-called Stork's Nest.

The schedule of issuance of quarter medals counts only
100 pieces. Each piece is accompanied by a special certificate of origin that tells the story of the Liberec Zoo.
