Stories of Our History

The Czech Mint issued the cycle "Stories of our history" including the fifth commemorative medal which is embossed from one quarter ounce of pure gold in order to commemorate the story of the Czech Boy Scouts.

When the Englishman Robert Baden-Powell wrote a handbook and organized a summer camp for boys, from whom he wanted to raise good citizens with a sense of duty and respect for nature, he certainly did not know that a global phenomenon was emerging. The Scout Association was founded in 1907. Enthusiastic teacher Antonín Benjamin Svojsík brought it to the Czech lands five years later. His first camp was attended by only thirteen czech scouts. However, czech scouting became so popular in Czechoslovakia, that a number of similarly oriented organizations emerged spontaneously. In order to prevent further fragmentation, they were unified in "The Boy Scouts Association of the Czechoslovak Republic" in 1919. But the tumultuous 20th century has set many obstacles to them. Their movement was based on democratic principles, so they have become a thorn in the eye of the emerging totalitarian regimes that forbade their activities. Many scouts were killed for their ideas, others have lost their freedom, but they  become members of the international Scout Association.

The obverse side of the medal from the studio of MgA. Martin Dašek presents the Czech flag and scout iconography - a characteristic hat, lily and a badge with three eagle feathers which the scouts earn for fulfilling three challanges of silence, hunger and solitude. The inscription presents the current name of the organization JUNÁK – THE CZECH BOY SCOUT together with the motto BE READY. The reverse side bears a group of scouts sitting by the fire in front of a tent with undercoat which was invented by the czech scouts. The dates in the inscription commemorate the foundation of the organization (1912), the establishment of the Boy Scouts Association (1919) and three restoration events of the organization (1945, 1968, 1989).

Each medal has a special certificate of origin that tells its story.
