Tokyo Olympics

The Czech team collected a total of eight medals at the Tokyo Paralympics - two gold, three silver and three bronze. A gold coin of the Czech Mint pays tribute to the gold Paralympian David Drahonínský.

David Drahonínský
was confined to a wheelchair after he fell from a third-floor balcony in a state of sleepwalking. However, the active young man, who was involved in football, hockey and taekwondo, did not succumb to self-pity and remained an enthusiastic sportsman. He took up archery with a pulley bow and, thanks to his enormous passion, became a three-time world champion and a two-time Paralympic champion. He won his first Paralympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and his second in Tokyo in 2021, when he beat his Turkish opponent by a single point in a closely contested match. "You don't fight for a Paralympic gold medal every day. I was well aware of the chance and I'm very happy that I've worked hard for it over the last two years. I wouldn't have been happy without the gold - I promised it to my dad, who died two years ago. That was my motivation," says the archer, who impresses the world not only with his performances but also with his victory dance and hairstyle in the colour of the Czech flag. He also brought back a silver medal from the Land of the Rising Sun, which he won together with his colleague Šárka Musilová.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker
MgA. Martin Dašek, presents the shooter who is concentrating on the bowstring. The inscription states DAVID DRAHONÍNSKÝ – TOKIO 2020 – ZLATÁ MEDAILE – LUKOSTŘELBA (DAVID DRAHONÍNSKÝ - TOKYO 2020 - GOLD MEDAL - ARCHERY). The Czech Mint's sports coins are issued with a foreign licence from the State of Samoa, and their obverse side therefore bears the necessary attributes of this issuer - the national emblem, the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2021 and the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS (WST).

Do not miss this golden reminder of a unique golden triumph of Czech sport!
