The Czech Mint published the eighth medal from the cycle Stories of Our History in the year when we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the play R.U.R. An entire ounce of gold is dedicated not only to futuristic drama, but also to the most famous Czech word in the world.

Karel Čapek, a symbol of the First Republic's culture and education, made history with universal literary talent and timeless ideas, which were reflected in a number of his works with science fiction themes. Their common feature is the deep skepticism with which the author viewed the thoughtless invocation of scientific progress. The Absolute Factory, Krakatit, The War with Newts, The Makropoulos Case, and the White Disease tell of groundbreaking discoveries that promise humanity unsuspected possibilities but lead to destruction. Čapek's first anti-utopian work - the drama R.U.R. from the 1920, takes place in the future, when people are able to create their perfect artificial replicas, which are to free them from hard work forever. The world is soon flooded with slave labour, there are more artificial beings than humans, and it is only a matter of time before creations rebel against their masters and human civilization disappears. The title of the work is an abbreviation of the fictitious company "Rossum's Universal Robots", where "robots" are artificial workers that it produces. Where did this neologism, which has spread to all the world's languages and which is now an integral part of ordinary speech, come from? Karel Čapek did not know how to name synthetic beings, so he asked his brother - the painter Josef for the advice. He literally yelled at him at work, with a brush with his mouth, "Call them robots." He was inspired by the historical word "robot", which means involuntary serf work…

The commemorative mintage was processed by medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek. Each side pays tribute to one of the Čapek brothers. The reverse side gives an industrial impression - the relief presents a factory and hundreds of anonymous dots that evoke the robots that the factory supplies into the world. On the obverse side there are the texts ROSSUM’S UNIVERSAL ROBOTS - RUR - KAREL ČAPEK. The reverse side is dominated by a depiction of a robot - in fact, it is a caricature of Karel Čapek, whom Josef Čapek styled as an artificial worker. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with an inscription JOSEF ČAPEK - SLOVO ROBOT.

Each of the only 100 pieces of medals is hand-numbered on the edge and provided with a special certificate of origin.
