Stories of Our History
The Czech Mint dedicated the seventh gold medal weighing one troy ounce from the cycle “Stories of Our History” to Radio Free Europe.
The totalitarian communist regime seized power in Czechoslovakia in 1948, and its leaders immediately began to decide what was the undeniable truth and what was pure hostile propaganda. A new radio station called Free Europe decided to take action against their lies three years later. Its mission was to spread uncensored and objective information. Communists were afraid of broadcasting and wanted to prevent its spread beyond the Iron Curtain. “What should such a government do when a free radio station began to disturb its carefully guarded illusion? Radio waves go past the cops, go over them, through them. So the government, which was disappointed in the cops, would call the musicians as the last option and tell them to prepare for the greatest performance and bring all the drums and trumpets they have. The Prague government is trying to interfere with our broadcasts by playing marches. And so we are facing each other: we who give you arguments and they who give you noise, ” said journalist Ferdinand Peroutka, who was one of the founders and the first director of czech broadcasting of Free Europe. The noise of marching music was gradually replaced by sophisticated jammers, but democratic thoughts still reached those who wanted to know the truth. The jammers ceased only in 1988, when the eastern block began to collapse…
The obverse side of the medal was processed by MgA. Martin Dašek. It presents a map of Central Europe. Waves of Free Europe spread from german Munich. The reverse side is dominated by a portrait of Ferdinand Peroutka, who lights a pipe. The journalist is surrounded by an inscription: VOICES OF FREE CZECHOSLOVAKIA - FERDINAND PEROUTKA - FIRST DIRECTOR RFE.
Each of only 100 pieces of medals is hand-numbered on the edge and bears a special certificate of origin.
