Product description
Ottokar I of Bohemia is one of the most important figures in our history - he saved a country on the verge of collapse and made it a strong and respected European kingdom. The Golden Bull of Sicily, whose significance is commemorated by a gold coin of the Czech Mint with a weight derived from the historical forty ducats, helped him to achieve this.
When Ottokar I of Bohemia, the third King of Bohemia, ascended the throne, his country was infested with corruption and subversive elements, enemies both domestic and foreign. He did not accept this situation and intended to establish order - among other things because he was the first Czech king whose title was to be inherited by his descendants. This extraordinary privilege was confirmed by the Golden Bull of Sicily, which was granted to the Přemyslid monarch by Frederick II in 1212 as a reward for his help in the fight for the imperial crown. As Frederick was not yet King of Rome at that time and thus did not possess the imperial insignia, he sealed the set of documents with the seal of Sicily, which he ruled... Ottokar I of Bohemia, encouraged by the granting of the hereditary title, did not know how to compromise in achieving his goals. He was aided by his diplomatic skills and military prowess. His discretion allowed him to make advantageous agreements, but at the same time he had no qualms about removing obstacles that stood in his way. When he died, he passed on to his son Wenceslas I a country that was peaceful and united inside, respected and feared outside. Ottokar I of Bohemia is thus rightly seen as the creator of a strong Czech kingdom.
The academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů dedicated the reverse side of the coin to the charismatic portrait of Ottokar I of Bohemia with the royal crown. The background behind the king is filled with a fragment of the Golden Bull of Sicily. The obverse side of the coin is also dedicated to the historical document. As this is a coin issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, the obverse side still bears the necessary attributes of the issuer - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 250 DOLLARS and the year of issue 2022.
The mintage of the coin is only 99 pieces.
