Guardians of czech mountains
Krakonoš - the ruler of the Krkonoše Mountains - is the second good spirit to appear on the Czech Mint's gold medal from the Guardians of the Czech Mountains series.
The Krkonoše Mountains are the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, so it is not surprising that they can boast the greatest mountain spirit. No one can say when and how Krakonoš came into the world - perhaps because he can change his shape and likes to transform into various creatures and objects. Over the centuries, people have described him in many different ways. Some have encountered a giant in the Giant Mountains, others a dwarf. Others have encountered a monk, a miner, a hunter or an old man, as well as a wild horse, a frog, a rooster, a raven or a demon with antlers. Most of us, however, remember Krakonoš as a strong bearded mountain man who occasionally teases travellers and brings bad weather, but is otherwise a righteous protector of the poor in their struggle against the greedy overlords.
Academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová has given the series an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. The obverse side presents a view of the Krkonoše nature, which is dominated by the Pančavský waterfall - the highest waterfall in the Czech Republic. The inscription on the obverse side bears STRÁŽCI ČESKÝCH HOR - KRAKONOŠ - KRKONOŠE. The reverse side of the commemorative medal is dominated by Krakonoš in the form of a giant. His majestic beard flows over the mountain peaks, and on the brim of his hat sits his faithful jay, who brings news from all corners of the Krkonoše Mountains. The composition of the reverse side is completed by characteristic representatives of the local flora.
The collector's series features a total of six mountain spirits from all over the country.
