Product description

A number of rituals are associated with the celebration of the arrival of a new life into the world. One of them has its roots in distant history and consists in gifting the baby with a gold coin. The Czech Mint has prepared a gold ducat to the birth of a child for everyone who wants to honour the old Czech traditions.

The custom of gifting a newborn baby with a precious metal first appeared in the Czech lands among the nobility, specifically among
the Rožmberk family during the Renaissance. They gave their children decorative gold buttons into the cradle, which gradually replaced gold coins. The custom soon became a fashion that spread among all levels of the population. A penny, usually a gold ducat, usually given by the godfather or godmother, was to ensure that the baby would not suffer in the future. This gift, which became the first investment in the newborn's life and a good luck charm, was then cherished by the parents until the child reached adulthood. After the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia, the role of a gift for the baby fell to the St.Wenceslas ducats, and the Czech Mint continued this beautiful historical tradition after 1993 .

The design of the ducat for
2022 is the work of medal maker Petr Patka, DiS. The obverse side is dedicated to a pair of cute babies which is supplemented with a heart and the inscription DUKÁT K NAROZENÍ DÍTĚTE (DUCAT TO THE BIRTH OF A CHILD). A boy and a girl can also be found on the reverse side, where they are surrounded by zodiac signs and various children's motifs.

In addition to the ducat, the special
gift packaging also includes a certificate of authenticity with space for inscribing a personal dedication and baby's details.
