National Heroes
The Czech Mint presents the first woman from the cycle of National Heroes. The golden ducat pays tribute to Milada Horáková, who deceased 70 years ago.
Execution of a woman, for political reasons, has been considered repulsive since the beginning of our civilization, and individual states used this punishment only in exceptional cases, such as the disclosure of a state secret at a time of threat to the country. Such a violent killing of a woman did not occur during the First Republic, but not at least a hundred years earlier during the reign of the Habsburg rulers. However, this was changed by the Nazis, who murdered thousands of women during the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia, and their ethnic origin or resistance activities served as an excuse. The same abominable act was later committed by the Communists, when they executed Milada Horáková. However, her judicial murder was more disgusting because she as the politician and social worker was convicted of offenses she had never committed. Communist propaganda portrayed her as the main figure in a fabricated "sabotage conspiracy" against the republic. What's more, communist judges and prosecutors have even repeatedly called her a supporter of "capitalist profiteers" and "fascists," although she has spent most of her life fighting for the rights of the socially disadvantaged people and spent almost five years in the Nazi prison for participating in the resistance movement.
The obverse side of the ducat is dominated by a portrait of Milada Horáková inspired by a photograph from the time of the trial. "The line, which runs horizontally from edge to edge across the neck, bears the inscription MILADA HORÁKOVÁ EXECUTED 1950. Above the line, on the right side, there is the year of birth 1901. In more than half of the inscription, there is the text SYMBOL OF RESISTANCE AGAINST TOTALITY, “ says academic sculptor Jiří Dostál. "The reverse side has a ragged surface symbolizing 'emptiness'. In the same area as on the obverse side, the area is interrupted by a horizontal proofed line that bears an excerpt of the text from the last letter of Milada Horáková before the execution - IT IS DAWN, I KEEP MY HEAD UP. Below the line, there is the silhouette of Prague Castle depicted ‘upside down’. Two vertical matt lines touching Prague Castle symbolize Milada Horáková's last words with a noose around her neck: "I fall, I fall…". In the upper part, in an arch reminiscent of a lectern, at which Milada Horáková stood during the trial, there is the text VICTIM OF THE CONSTRUCTED MONSTR PROCESS that is placed in the inscription, “ adds the author of the ducat.
A narrative packaging in the form of a book, which contains a treatise by an expert Czech historian PhDr. Petr Koura, Ph.D., builds an integral part of the issue. You can store your collection of National Heroes in a practical collector's box.
