Old Picture Postcards
Another gold mini-coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard with a Slovak motif commemorating Trenčín Castle.
The Trenčín Castle, which dominates the town of Trenčín and the entire region of Povážie, is one of the largest castle complexes in Europe. It had been built since the 11th century to protect the trade routes that connected mining towns in central Slovakia with Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Poland. In the 13th century, Trenčín Castle became the seat of Matúš Čák Trenčanský - the legendary "Lord of the Váh and the Tatras", who was the most powerful man in Slovakia. A lithographic postcard from the late 19th century, which served as a template for the coin packaging, presents not only the castle, but also the nearby church at Malá Skalka and the ruins of the monastery at Velká Skalka. "The depiction of Trenčín's main square with the plague column and the church complements the view of the interior of this sanctuary," adds postcard expert Radoslav Chlapovič.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Bc. Zuzana Hubené, DiS., presents the castle situated on a rocky outcrop of limestone hills above Trenčín. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the inscription TRENČIANSKY HRAD. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue 2022.
An issue that will delight numismatists and philocartographers is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
