Old Picture Postcards

Another gold mini-coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard with a Slovak motif commemorating Piešt'any and its statue of the Berlolamač.

The area of today's
Piešt'any was inhabited by prehistoric people who were attracted by the mineral springs that did not freeze in winter. Many centuries later, the miraculous power of thermal water and sulphur mud led to the construction of spas that have helped hundreds of thousands of patients with musculoskeletal pain. In addition to the healing power of nature, the largest and most sought-after spa in Slovakia offers a unique spa culture that has been developed since the 18th century. The lithographic postcard, which served as a template for the coin packaging, presents the spa house named after Emperor Franz Joseph I, the Kursalon spa hall, the Napoleonic baths and the chapel. "Life in Piešt'any at the end of the 19th century is presented by a view of the street in front of the spa hotel Panský Inn. The depiction of a pawn reminds us of the way patients are transported," explains postcard expert Radoslav Chlapovič.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker
Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., presents the symbol of Piešt'any in the form of a man who fought off an illness and triumphantly breaks his crutch. Berlolamač became a mascot of the spa at the end of the 19th century, when he was drawn by Artur Heyer, and a monumental bronze statue by Robert Kühmayer has given strength to the patients since 1933. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the inscription PIEŠŤANY. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue 2022.

An issue that will delight numismatists and philocartists is an original and affordable collector's piece and an attractive regional gift.
