Patrons

Another gold miniature coin of the Czech Mint from the Patrons series is dedicated to Saint Urban of Langres.

Urban became a bishop in the Burgundian municipality of Langres in 374. As the most important bishop of Gaul at that time, he founded churches and converted pagans to the faith. However, his power was not to the liking of some people, and political unrest broke out. Urban had to flee his seat to save his life. According to legend, he hid in a vineyard where he was protected by vine-growers and winegrowers. The bishop took a liking to the sacrificial people and made them Christians. He then secretly exercised his office with their help. He travelled from vineyard to vineyard, preaching and spreading Christianity. He held wine in high esteem, for Christian doctrine identifies it with the blood of Jesus Christ. He also performed numerous miracles - for example, he once chased away his persecutors with a hailstorm, but the vines were completely unharmed. No wonder all people working with wine accepted him as their patron saint. He was also popular among coopers and gardeners. He helps alcoholics and protects crops from storms, frost, snow and mould.

When creating the reverse side of the coin, the medal maker David Kružliak respected the iconography, according to which St. Urban has the attributes of a bishop and a winemaker - a crutch, a mitre, a bunch of wine and a vine. The composition is supplemented with a bilingual inscription of SV. / ST. URBAN. As the licence to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.

The gold coin weighing one half gram is set in a special Czech-English packaging. It will serve as an affordable gift as well as an original addition to your collection and a good luck charm.
