Patrons
The gold miniature coin of the Czech Mint from the Slovak branch of the Patrons series is dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist.
Saint John had a special place alongside Jesus Christ. He was his favourite, the only one of the apostles to stand under his cross and was eventually entrusted to take care of the Virgin Mary. Therefore, he is often referred to as the Lord's beloved. John was horribly tortured after the death of Jesus, at a time of severe persecution of Christians. On the orders of the Roman Emperor Domitian, he was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil, but the vessel of death miraculously became a refreshing bath. The emperor was astonished and sent the unharmed apostle into exile. John then wrote the fourth canonical gospel, which is why he is called the Evangelist, and also the controversial book of Revelation, which is known as the Apocalypse. The saint became the patron saint of all theologians and writers, as well as booksellers, printers, bookbinders, papermakers, and many others due to his literary talents. He is the patron saint of friendship. He helps with poisoning, burns, leg pain and epilepsy.
The medal maker David Kružliak has placed a half-figure of St. John with two typical attributes on the reverse side of the coin. The first is an eagle, which symbolizes John's soaring and high theology. The second is a chalice, referring to the legend of the poisoned wine that failed to harm John. The Czech-English inscription on the reverse says SVATÝ JAN EVANGELISTA – SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST. The obverse side then presents the profile and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) - or the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign licence to mint its own commemorative coins.
The gold coin weighing one half gram is set in a special Slovak-English packaging. It will serve as an affordable gift as well as an original addition to your collection and will become a good luck charm.
