Old Picture Postcards

Pilsen is another important town that appears on the gold mini coin of the Czech Mint. The coin was set in a replica of a historical postcard from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The West Bohemian metropolis was established at the crossroad of trade routes from the German lands to Prague. However, it had been already mentioned in 976.
The three-nave Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, whose 102 meter high tower is the highest church tower in the Czech Republic and even the world-famous brewing tradition has always attracted visitors and therefore the need for a variety of postcards to promote the city grew up. “This beautiful multi-shot lithography with a sensitive artistic composition depicts the Pilsen folk costume and important buildings of the city with the central motif of the cathedral. Collectible valuable numbered postcard was made by an anonymous publisher in 1897 and it was sent to Bakov nad Jizerou in 1899. The postage stamp on the address page has a value of 2 pennies of the Austro-Hungarian currency, ” the deltiologist Pavel Vursta says about the original printed matter which served as a template for packaging of the coin.

Medal maker
MgA. Tereza Eisnerová dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a view of the Pilsen Cathedral from the northeast. The composition is supplemented by an inscription PILSEN - CATHEDRAL OF ST. BARTOLOMEW. The obverse side bears the portrait and the name of the ruler Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2020 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), which are the attributes of the island Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to mint its own commemorative coins.

The original issue will please numismatics, postcard collectors and Pilsen patriots.
