Old Picture Postcards

The Czech Mint introduces Karlovy Vary as an addition to a number of towns that appear in the free cycle of gold minicoins set in replicas of period postcards.

The world-famous spa town of Karlovy Vary is rich in numerous sights and postcards. The lithographic postcard with the German inscription "GRUSS AUS KARLSBAD" (greeting from Karlovy Vary), which served as a model for the coin packing, captures the building of the Hot Spring Colonnade on the bank of the Teplá River and the central hot spring with figures in the Art Nouveau frame. The postcard was issued by Ludwig Roth in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg in 1898. It was sent on August 9 of the same year and delivered to Budapest the following day. Postcards were a new and popular form of communication at the end of the 19th century - spa tourism prompted to publish and use them.

Medal maker Ludmila Kodytková, DiS, placed the front part of the Market Colonnade on the reverse side of the coin. It remained richly carved in Swiss style unlike the Hot Spring Colonnade, which was replaced by a modern reinforced concrete functionalist building. The obverse side bears the portrait and the name of the ruler Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), which means the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to mint its commemorative coins.

The original issue is perfect for numismatics, filocartists, tourists and spa guests.
