Old Picture Postcards

Another gold mini coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard with a Slovak motif commemorates Holíč.

Holíč is located in the north-west of Slovakia, on the very border with the Czech Republic. As evidenced by the mysterious megaliths, this area was inhabited by people more than five thousand years ago, but the first written mention of the town dates back to 1205. The local fortress which rivalled the Přemyslid castle in nearby Hodonín, protected an important road connecting the Czech lands with Hungary. Therefore, it is not surprising that a number of prominent personalities sought it. First of all, it was occupied by Matúš Čák Trenčanský - the most powerful man in Slovakia - then it was conquered by the Czech King Jan Lucemburský and later it was purchased by František Štěpán Lotrinský - the husband of Maria Theresa, who made Holíč the economic centre of the entire Záhori region. The Holíč manufactory, which produced faience, stoneware and porcelain, was a prime example of a successful industrial enterprise of the 18th century. At that time, the water castle was transformed into a Baroque chateau. It served as a representative summer residence of the Empress, who often stayed here... The historical postcard from the turn of the 19th and 20th century, which served as a template for the coin packaging, presents not only the castle and other architectural monuments of Holíč, but also the pastimes of the time - deer hunting and horse racing.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Adam Liška, presents the Baroque-Classical manor house in Holíč. Since the coin of the Czech Mint is issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the name and portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2024.

The issue, which will delight numismatists and philocartists, is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
