Product description

The gold coin from the Czech Mint’s open series, which pays tribute to Alfons Mucha, serves as a reminder that he was not only a painter but also a mystic.

The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is known as the Belle Époque. This era was marked by idealism, a flourishing of the arts, science, technology, and entertainment, but also by a belief in the power of the human spirit. This belief was shared by Alfons Mucha, who lived and worked during the Belle Époque. Although—or rather because—he had received a strict Catholic upbringing, he was drawn to mysticism, esotericism, philosophy, spiritualism, and the study of mysterious teachings. It is said that during séances he summoned the spirit of the deceased Josef Mánes, whom he consulted on how to paint. In addition to occultism, he was strongly inspired by Slavic culture and folk traditions. He gave tangible form to this fascination in the Slav Epic, in which he worked with religious and mythological motifs. Under the influence of symbolism, he created personifications of the seasons, the elements, or ideals. His passion for the mysterious, combined with idealism, then led the painter to the Masonic lodge. He gained considerable influence among the Freemasons, who strive to perfect humanity through rituals and ceremonies. He attained the highest degree of initiation and became the highest representative of the Freemasons in Czechoslovakia.

Medallist Mgr. Art.Miroslav Hric, ArtD., based the coin’s design on Mucha’s work titled Madonna Among Lilies, which was originally intended as a mural for a church in Jerusalem. The reverse side of the coin does not focus on the Virgin Mary herself, but on a girl in Slavic folk costume, whose striking physical presence contrasts with the ethereality of religion. The obverse is dominated by decorative floral motifs. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign license from the island of Niue, the obverse side also bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.

The coin is sealed in themed packaging.
