Product description

The Czech National Bank's series dedicated to urban conservation areas in the Czech Republic presents its eleventh issue. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK, minted in standard quality, commemorates the beauty of Plzeň.

The city of Plzeň was founded by King Wenceslas II in 1295. Its advantageous location at the bottom of a shallow basin near the confluence of four rivers predestined it to become a commercial crossroads on the route from Prague to the Bavarian cities of Regensburg and Nuremberg. A generous Gothic urban planner developed a perfectly thought-out concept with a developed chessboard grid, allowing Plzeň to develop freely for centuries. Soon it became the largest and most important Czech metropolis after Prague and Kutná Hora... In the middle of the city, a large square was created, which served as a marketplace. The unusual central feature of this space was the Church of St. Bartholomew, on the site of which the current Gothic cathedral with the highest church tower in the country was later built. However, this is not the only dominant feature of the city – lovers of historical architecture can admire the Gothic Gerlachovský House, the town hall built in the unusual style of the Northern Italian Renaissance, the Baroque tower of the monastery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Neo-Renaissance Josef Kajetán Tyl Theater, and a number of less conspicuous but valuable houses built in the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau periods. In 1989, the historic center of the city was deservedly designated a Municipal Heritage Reserve...

The design by academicsculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won the Czech National Bank's art competition. The expert committee praised the elaborate collage of the most important monuments within the urban conservation area. On the obverse side, you will find the Renaissance town hall on Republic Square and the Municipal Library on Bedřich Smetana Street. The reverse side is dominated by St. Bartholomew's Cathedral and the Red Heart House on Republic Square.
