Product description

The five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, presents its eighth issue. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5,000 CZK minted in top quality proof reminds us of the beauty of Moravská Třebová.

Moravská Třebová, located on the Czech-Moravian border, was founded in the 13th century. As evidenced by its regular layout, it was a typical colonial town that grew "on a green field". This was at a time when people were moving from densely populated areas to the unspoilt countryside. The manor flourished at the turn of the 15th and 16th century, when it was ruled by Ladislav of Boskovice, who had the local castle rebuilt into a magnificent chateau. The castle portal, one of the oldest Renaissance monuments north of the Alps, has been preserved since 1492. In 1509 and 1540 the town was devastated by fires, but managed to rise from the ashes. It was enlarged, built of stone and brick and fortified with stone walls. Further growth took place during the reign of Ladislav Velen of Žerotín at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when Moravská Třebová became a centre of humanism. From this time, when the town was nicknamed "Moravian Athens", the Mannerist arcaded wings of the castle - the greatest local pride - date back. Other precious monuments that earned the historic centre of Moravská Třebová the title of a town conservation area in 1980 include the Renaissance Town hall, burgher houses with late Gothic and Renaissance mausoleums, the Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Baroque Plague Column.

The author of the coin is the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. The expert committee of the Czech National Bank appreciated "a very elaborate collage of the main landmarks of the city's conservation area". While the obverse side is dominated by the Town hall and the castle, the reverse side features the town houses, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Plague Column and the fountain in the castle courtyard.

You can store gold coins from the ten-piece cycle of the Czech National Bank in a wooden collector's case which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
