Product description

The fifth gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK from the five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, presents the beauty of Kroměříž. The mintage stands out for its top-quality proof.

The Moravian market settlement of Kroměříž became the property of the bishops of Olomouc and later the archbishops, who built a summer residence there at the time of the ecclesiastical colonisation at the beginning of the 12th century. The Gothic castle was rebuilt over the centuries into a Baroque chateau, which was seamlessly connected to charming gardens - the larger romantic Under Castle Garden and the smaller Baroque Flower Garden, which is an authentically preserved object of geometrically conceived garden art of the 17th century. The valuable interiors of the castle are an extraordinary complex consisting of representative and living spaces, a unique picture gallery, a library and a music archive. The bishops of Olomouc had special privileges, including the right to mint coins - this was done in Kroměříž in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the castle therefore has an extensive collection of ecclesiastical coins, which is surpassed only by the numismatic collection in the Vatican. The castle and its gardens have been the heart of the Kroměříž Municipal conservation area since 1978 and it has been added to UNESCO World heritage list since 1998.

The design by the medal maker Karolína Kučerová won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee was impressed by the imaginative collage of historical Kromeriz buildings on the reverse side of the coin, which consists not only of the Archbishop's Castle and the Garden of Flowers, but also the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the St.Moritz Church. The Commission also appreciated the obverse side, which presents heraldic animals of the Czech Republic embedded between the colonnade columns in the Garden of Flowers.

The collection of gold coins from the ten-piece cycle of the Czech National Bank can be stored in a wooden collector's case that is also offered by the Czech Mint.
